Standard 3: Learning Environments
Inclusive Classroom Culture Plan
In the classroom there will be a wide variety of students with a range of academic and behavioral struggles. There will be unexpected interfering behaviors that will arise and there will be moments that nobody has prepared for, but each situation must be dealt with properly and effectively. Additionally, a teacher must be prepared with a tool belt of strategies and methods that can be applied to decrease the frequency of these interrupting behaviors. For this artifact an intensive Inclusive Classroom Culture Plan was created to compile all the different topics and strategies that could be used to create a classroom that is both efficient academically and emotionally supportive for all students. The plan includes strategies regarding Standard Operating Procedures, Functional Behavior, Social Emotional Learning, Zones of Regulation, ways to adapt one’s Teaching Voice, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, and a plethora of other tools that will be useful in a classroom setting. This plan is set up in a way that is beneficial to the user, in a style that I can navigate whenever I need to find a solution. This Artifact relates to Standard 3, Learning Environments because it provides the resources and reasons to create a classroom that inspires restorative practices and personal growth. This artifact goes into great depth about the importance of creating routines, the importance of being prepared, and the importance of understanding one’s own values in a classroom setting. All of these aspects go into properly managing a classroom and creating an environment in which students feel safe to learn.
As a student you don’t realize the amount of effort that goes into creating an environment that fosters learning and collaboration between the students. When in school, I mainly thought that the teacher’s role in the classroom was to teach the material required of them, but in reality that’s not the case. A great amount of time and effort goes into preparing for the school year whether it’s preparing a classroom management plan, deciding the decorations to put up on the walls, or setting up the room to be inclusive to all walks of life. During the school year, this work only piles up as one has to manage academic goals, social emotional learning goals, and building relationships with the students. A teacher’s job is not only to teach the desired subject, it’s their job to create a space in which students feel safe enough to relax and learn. Without a safe environment, these students won’t be able to take in the information being taught. As a teacher, this artifact is a tool that I will use throughout my career as a teacher and in life outside of the classroom. These skills presented in the artifact are all important skills to have when deciding the way you want your classroom to look and the emotions that you want it to evoke when someone enters the room. Each of these strategies has its own purpose that builds relationships with students, without punishing them and without breaking the trust built over the school year. Overall, I have learned that the most important aspect of managing a classroom is to create a trusting relationship with the students that encourages them to go to you with any problems and not be scared to speak up. It is my goal as a teacher to foster meaningful and trusting relationships with my students that help them grow in all aspects of their lives.
